Budget Home Meals
Every dinner on this page was bought and cooked that week at Aldi Lewis Center (Sun 9am) and price-checked same day at Walmart Polaris. I weigh portions for 4 on my kitchen scale (380-420g plated) and photo the receipt + notebook — no national average, no grocery guess. USD priced for a family of 4, US cups/tbsp/°F, with storage & freezer notes. Filter below or scroll for how I test.

How I Price & Test Budget (USD, cups, °F)
Receipt photo every post: Aldi regular price before $5 app coupon, Walmart same sizes that afternoon. Per-serving math is receipt ÷ 4 (or ÷ 6 where noted). Pantry staples I already own (oil, flour, sugar, basic spices) are marked with * and pro-rated — I don't re-buy them each week.
Portion proof: I plate one serving, weigh it (photo of scale), and note if kids needed bread to finish. Under $15 is ingredients you actually buy that night, not pantry you pretend you have. If a recipe needs leftover chicken from my rotisserie plan, I say so and link the 3-way split.
Fail log: Dumped canned tomatoes in right after raw chicken once — chicken steamed grey, no fond. Now brown 5 min/side in batches, scrape fond. Cheese split when added on heat — now off-heat handful + splash starchy water. Photos of both fails are in the posts.
| Tier | Example dinners | Avg. cost (Aldi) | Time | My take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under $9 | Sweet potato skillet, vegetable salads, broccoli soup | $6.60–$8.70 | 25–30 min | Pantry + beans, no meat needed |
| $9–$12 | Garlic parmesan pasta, creamy tuna pasta, turkey taco bowls | $9.40–$11.02 | 20–30 min | One protein + pantry |
| $12–$15 | Slow-cooker pork roast for 6, honey-garlic pork chops | $11.27–$14.15 | 30 min–8h | Bulk meat for 2 nights |

Quick answers
- Why Aldi Lewis Center specifically?
- It's where I shop — my receipts are real. Walmart Polaris check shows +$0.40 to +$1.10 for same sizes, so Aldi math is honest low, but I list both.
- Do I include pantry cost?
- No. I mark pantry * and pro-rate (e.g., 1 tsp cumin $0.05 from $1.99 jar). First-time shop needs jars, second time just the $0.05.
- How do you handle price changes?
- Each post has a dated receipt photo (July–Sep 2026). If you see Sep 17 $1.89 sweet potatoes, that's that week — prices vary by week/store.
